Comment: A trifecta of Historic, Amazing Events this week Aligning labor costs at Westlake, 2) Rescue of WRH by Fiscal Court, 3) And the decision of the Adair County SBDM; the latter, in view of writer, 'in direct opposition to the will of we the people By Billy Joe Fudge Personal commentary We here in Adair County have witnessed a trifecta of historic and amazing events this week. First is the decision by our hospital board to attempt to align the labor costs at Westlake with the actual needs at present. Second is the decision by our fiscal court, in response to the hospital board's actions, to borrow one and a half million dollars to keep the doors open at Westlake. Third is the decision by our Adair County High School's Site-based Council to hire a foreign language teacher rather than hiring a replacement for the retiring agriculture teacher. The first two concerning the financial farce at Westlake were responses to the demand by "we the people of Adair County" to keep our hospital open, not at any cost, but by repairing the financial foundation so an orderly, logical, and systematic rebuilding of Westlake can begin. Although there is some short-term pain for many at Westlake and for our community, now that "we the people" and Westlake management have stepped out of the quicksand, this situation should at long last be headed in the right direction. The third decision was made in direct opposition to what appears to be an overwhelming desire by "we the people of Adair County" to maintain the status quo of our Vocational Agriculture Program. While there are persons at each end of this quandary with radical viewpoints, I've heard no one with true concern for our educational system here in Adair County who is opposed to establishing a foreign language position but most all were adamant that, "if our agriculture program isn't broken, don't fix it". - Billy Joe Fudge This story was posted on 2012-08-25 10:11:43
