Of Bar Codes and Countries Re: Wants list of bar codes for the different countries There have been a number of emails circulating that purport to give a list of "country codes" in bar codes to make it easier to "buy American." Unfortunately, the list is not what it appears. (Article continues...) The list was of 3-digit country codes, but it's from the GS1 organization, and, as they say on their web site: "GS1 Prefixes do not provide identification of country of origin for a given product. They simply provide number capacity to different countries for assignment from that location to companies who apply. Those companies in turn may manufacture products anywhere in the world."In other words, the codes are assigned to companies, not products, and lots of companies manufacture lots of products in different places. In addition, it's unclear whether those codes correlate to specific positions in all UPC Bar Codes. According to Wikipedia, there are standard prefixes in a UPC code, but they correlate to type of product, not origin. There is some specific legislation about labeling of automobiles and textiles, and more generally any advertised claims about country of origin fall under the authority of the Federal Trade Commission, who say "manufacturers and marketers and Persons who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC’s Made in USA policy." (ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_USA) So if your goal is to "buy American," it's better to look for "Made in America" on the label than to try to decipher UPC codes.
