For Lewis Garrison, Westlake holds a very special place He puts it bluntly: "If it were not for the hospital. I would not be living today." He remembers care he got before and after a heart attack. Comments on past business practices and the way forward to never let what happened happen again. And he says if it takes a tax, he's willing to pay his part to save the hospital By Lewis Garrison Westlake Hospital Not really sure what was happening at first, a family member took me to the ER here in Columbia. The ER staff took care of me and prepared me to be flown to Louisville. They were very efficient and professional. If the hospital had not been there, I may not be living today. When I returned from Louisville, I had rehab at Westlake Regional Hospital. I do not believe I could have been taken care of any better, or treated any nicer, at any other facility. Our hospital has a wonderful staff. Being a local business owner for over 40 years, I am quite confused as to how the hospital got in the shape financially that they are in. For our business to be qualified for certain types of work, we are required to have annual audits. The auditors are in our office for a week, using our computers, going through our files. Verifying accounts receivables and payables. They don't take our word for anything. Everything is verified. I find it hard to believe that a hospital could get by with a less intrusive type of audit. Never the less, what is done, is done. Now it appears that the only way to save our hospital is with a new tax. There aren't many people, if any, who like to pay taxes, but if you or a loved one were on the brink of death, wouldn't you willingly pay that tax to be able to save your loved one? I am willing to pay my part to save our hospital. Then, we need a change up in the business office, board, or whoever is responsible for making sure something like this could never happen again. Someone IS responsible and should be held so. -Lewis Garrison This story was posted on 2012-08-23 14:27:53
