Hospital: Not a matter of need but of viability

There's no bigger fan of Westlake than he, writer says. But insists the hospital needs to save itself

By Jarrett Miller

Many may not remember but a little over 4 years ago our daughter was born prematurely and was born on the gurney in the Westlake ER.

She was only 1 lb 6 oz and had little chance of survival.

The staff at that hospital worked feverishly to save her life and today she is a healthy and happy 4 year old. I say this so that everyone will understand that there will never be a bigger fan of Westlake Hospital.

With that said, we need to explore every option for the hospital to save itself. It needs to save itself. It cannot and should not become a burden on this community. That is why I will fight any attempt to impose a tax.

People seem to believe that the hospital is "Too important to let fail." I strongly disagree.

If the hospital cannot support itself, it is time to let it go. We need to learn the same lesson as the federal government. You cannot sacrifice our economy to save banks that are "Too big to fail." And you cannot saddle this community with even more burden because the hospital is "Too important."

The hospital closing will create a service void in this area and, as the free market has taught us, someone will eventually step in to fill that void. - Jarrett Miller
