The rest of the story on the J.T. Coomer Bldg. bus garage Credit where credit is due. Idea for dramatic renovation came with leadership from Classified Employees Donnie Curry, Tommy Murray, Ronnie Bryant, and Roy Lockridge who came through magnificently, Superintendent Reed and Director of Student Transportation gratefully acknowledge Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Ed Waggener It would have been simple to assume that the transformation of the J.T. Coomer Bus Garage was a result of the presence of a new superintendent taking office. "That's not the case," Superintendent Alan W. Reed said. "The idea came from some dedicated Classified Employees, who presented the idea, and did the work on their own time." The four employees, Director of Student Transportation David Jones said, were Donnie Curry, Tommy Murray, Ronnie Bryant, and Roy Lockridge. The work was completed just days before the passing of Roy Lockridge (Roy Lockridge, Adair County, KY (1943-2012)); so, in a way, the renovation is a monument to the memory of a wonderful man who worked on the project. The administration did provide the materials, but the work was done almost entirely by the four men, and, Mr. Reed said, "David Jones. He may be in an administrative position, but he doesn't hesitate to roll up his sleeves and help." There remains a critical need for a new bus garage, but finances just don't allow replacement right now. Mr. Reed acknowledges that. "But just because we can't get the buildings we need doesn't mean that we can't make the ones we have be as attractive as possible. I believe that students do better, think better, and take care of property better when the facilities look as good as they can." Everyone who has passed the building has noticed how the bright white stands out. "It sets a theme," Mr. Reed said. "Our colors are Red, White and Blue. Our signage, our uniforms, the flags we fly are those colors. As quickly as our maintenance department - and volunteers - can handle the work, we'll be painting other buildings white." White buildings make a statement, he said. The work just done includes new letters for the main sign, "J.T. Coomer Bldg," color coded paint on dumpsters, electrical entrances, and fuel tanks. A new logo designed by Hi-Temp Graphics will be affixed to the dumpster at the bus garage and at dumpsters all around the campus, Mr. Reed said. The floor of the garage has been painted with a special epoxy coating. "It's almost too pretty to pull school buses onto," Mr. Reed said. The work won't stop progress toward new and better buildings when they can be afforded, Mr. Reed said. "We'll always want to be in the mainstream - maybe a little ahead of our peers - being green. There will be times in the future when replacing a building will be cheaper than retrofitting old ones. But the board and the custodial staff, intend to do the best with the very tight budget we have. We know that when as the economy improves, Adair Countians will come through for education the way they come through in all other ways. "This is a can-do county, and people like Donnie Curry, Tommy Murray, Ronnie Bryant, and Roy Lockridge - and David Jones - are demonstrating that the district is a can-do organization where kids come first and 'stand-and-deliver' academic results are the priority."
