A New School Year can mean changes for motorists

By Chris Jessie
News from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

Elizabethtown, KY (August 3, 2012) - As schools start a new year in August, motorists are reminded that bus routes often change stopping points from year to year. New stops can surprise drivers who are accustomed to driving the same roads each morning and afternoon.

Kevin Blain, Traffic Engineer with the Department of Highways District 4 in Elizabethtown, says new signs have been standardized for marked stops along bus routes. The sign is now designed with symbols as opposed to the former "Bus Stop Ahead" lettering. As before, these signs are only warranted where hills and/or curves limit sight distance.

"We have a great relationship with transportation directors throughout the 11 counties in the district. Most of them will contact us within a few weeks after school starts, requesting signs to alert motorists of stops that need to be marked," Blain added.

The beginning of a new school year also means that school zone speed limits are in effect during programmed hours. With activities going on year round, many school zone flashers remain active through the summer. As school begins, light traffic in these zones through the summer translates to congested traffic each morning and afternoon. Motorists should pay close attention to school zones, avoid usage of electronic devices that cause distraction from focusing on the road and operate within posted limits.

-If you have questions about school bus stop signs or school zones on state roads, contact the Department of Highways District Office in Elizabethtown by calling 270.566-5066.
