Winning the new car at the 1958 Adair County Fair

A big moment in Adair County Fair History: The night Rodney Thompson - 16 then - won the car.

By Rodney L. Thompson Sr.

As the Adair County Fair approaches, I need to tell the story about winning the car.

For several years around 1958, the tickets for the new car to be given away at the fair were free, but you had to be present to win.

In 1958, I was working at the old Rialto Theatre. I was the popcorn person.

Several weeks prior to the fair, the VFW members would be on the Columbia square giving tickets away.

Serveral daughters of VFW members were friends of mine and they too would be passing out tickets.

As these daughters would pass my popcorn machine, outside the Rialto, I would swap popcorn for tickets on the car; thank you Judy Rowe - the owner. By the time the fair started, I had acquired several tickets.

The night of the drawing, I was standing alongside the rail on the race track and when I saw they had called one of my numbers. I had written all my numbers on a card for quick reference. At this time, my friends who were along side me - I think they were Jimmy Sapp and Ronnie Pickett - started going through these tickets to find the winning one. This process took some time and they started to call another number while we were hollering to wait while we continued to look for that winning ticket.

In the end, they waited for me to produce the winning ticket and even let me drive the car home that night.

Just imagine, a 16 year old, and walking; and what a thrill that was and this thrill lasted for a long time. I dont think I slept much for weeks after winning the car. - Rodney L Thompson Sr
