Comment: Remembering heritage, looking ahead on flag display

Flags draw greater attention when they are put up on patriotic holidays and taken down at other times. Larry Walker cites history of flag display here, with notable nods to former Mayors, the Chamber and Fire Department, his father Bill Walker, and the "younger firemen": David Martin, Robert Harmon, Tommy Corbin, Dennis Loy, Roger Cundiff, Terry Harvey and others. Looking ahead, he offers a no blame solution for the current issue.

I agree with Walter Murley & Joe Hare about the condition of the flags.

These flags are not designed to be flown in this type of application on a permanent basis. Putting the flags up for patriotic holidays & taking them down afterward draw more attention & significance than leaving them up all summer.

The patriotic display of the flags in Columbia on the square began with flags on their own wooden pole on each side of the streets leading onto the square several years ago and then expanded to the poles on the streets leading into town.

It may have been started by one of our former mayors, but it was later adopted by the Chamber of Commerce.

My father, the late Bill Walker, spearheaded getting the flags up & down and stored them between the holidays with the volunteer help of the at the time "younger volunteer firemen" including David Martin, Robert Harmon, Tommy Corbin, Dennis Loy, Roger Cundiff, Terry Harvey & others.

I am all for patriotism and displaying the flag.

Hopefully when the new flags are obtained, they can be displayed in a manner which will ensure their appearance for many holidays. - Larry Walker

Thanks, Larry Walker. Only your father could have said it better. - EW
