Somerset, KY (June 21, 2012) - Adair County Adult Education is one of 49 county adult ed programs statewide now served by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). Somerset Community College, one of 16 community colleges in KCTCS, will serve Adair, Casey and McCreary County Adult Education as Fiscal Agent.

"We are excited to begin serving the people in Adair County," said SCC Workforce Solutions Adult Education Coordinator Sandy Claunch. "We'll be helping people in multiple areas."

Claunch said that in addition to GED services, the center will focus on helping qualify Adair Countians to upgrade their educational skills to prepare for college and become work-force ready. The center will offer the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) and plans to work with the community as they focus on becoming one of the first "Work-Ready" communities in the state. This certification was filed earlier, according to ColumbiaMagazine.com in a story today.

The center will have a new location at 969 Campbellsville Road in Columbia and will share space with the local Office of Employment and Training (OET), as well as Workforce Investment Board staff.

"We hope to be able to provide a mini 'one-stop shop' for those looking for employment or educational training," said Claunch.

The new center will be open for business Monday, July 2nd at 969 Campbellsville Road. The new phone number is 270-384-1741. The former location on Indian Drive is now closed.

Somerset Community College sincerely appreciates the assistance of the Adair County Board of Education in making this transition. The County Board of Education is an integral partner with the College in providing GED and workplace preparation training for Adair Countians needing these services which are always free of charge to participants.

SCC is currently in the process of taking applications for qualified instructors and other personnel for the Adair County Adult Education program. Those interested in additional information, or applying for a position, should contact Sandy Claunch at 606-679-8501. Applications will be taken after July 1.

According to the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, Adair county has just over 5,000 individuals 18 years and older without a high school diploma or GED. Overall, 18 percent of Kentuckians age 25 and older do not have a high school credential. The goal of the council, as well as the adult education centers, is to provide a pathway through attainment of a GED or other workforce readiness classes which will enable completers to continue their education, or have the minimum credentials to get a good job.
