Traffic: Columbia Avenue, Glasgow, being resurfaced By Keirsten Jaggers News from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Bowling Green BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (June 20, 2012) - Columbia Avenue in Glasgow is in the process of undergoing pavement repairs to improve the surface of the roadway. Problems with the pavement became evident in 2008 for Columbia Avenue when the concrete underneath the asphalt began to buckle and create an uneven surface along the heavily traveled route that leads out from the square to Glasgow High School. This process has taken four years to complete due to budget limitations stemming from the fact that KYTC maintenance funds are split between twelve districts across the state. In 2009, W.L. Harper was awarded the contract for pavement and joint repairs in the amount of $1,185,000. Unfortunately, the concrete section between Front Street and Davis Street was in worse condition than was originally thought. Crews were only able to address 50 percent of the concrete sections between Davis Street and Front Street. The funds also paid for some concrete patching on the section from Davis Street to Glasgow High School as well as some joint replacement and milling. The joint replacement work involves removing the rubber substance in between the sections of concrete that allow it to expand and move without breaking and replacing it with new material. Milling work was also done during this phase of the project but could not be performed on the older sections of concrete that had not been replaced yet due to the depth of the concrete (4-5 inches).
