Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

The Columbia/Adair County Work Ready Community application was filed in Frankfort, KY, this past Monday, on time for consideration this summer. It was hand delivered by Chairman Alan W. Reed, Chair of the C/AC Work Ready Community Committee, and Darryl McGaha, of the Lake Cumberland Area Development District

The finished application was the culmination of a process which began in November 2011, and required dedicated input by a cadre of community leaders, which included the following members, as of the first days of the committee besides Committee Chair Alan W. Reed:

Major subcommittee chairs:
  • Educational Attainment: Linda McKinley Grider, Lindsey Wilson College
  • Broadband Availability: Darryl McGaha
  • National Career Readiness Certificate Attainment: Mary Ann Branham
  • Graduation Rate: Darrell Treece
Others working through the various sub-committees:
Jeff Adams, KY Tech; Ron Heath; Jim Hadley; Eric West, Duo-County Telephone; Winfrey Bates, SCC; Ben Sams, Windstream; Marsha Walker; Doug McCamish; Dan Antle; Sue Stivers, Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce; Linda Waggener, Campbellsville University; and Jaime White, ACHS Youth Service Center.
The Work-Ready Community designation, if approved, will help in industrial recruitment by proving to potential employers and new industry that our work force has the proper training and other "soft skills" (ability to work in groups, independent thinking, initiative and drive) to make them want to locate here.

The application also addressed changes in educational

delivery at Adair County High School, broad-band internet availability in the community, and especially Soft-Skills.Adair will be among the first ten communities in Kentucky that will be designated either "Work-Ready" or "Work-Ready in Progress". Through Governor Steve Beshear, Kentucky was among the first three states to sign on the national initiative. The committee and sub-committees were comprised of a cross-section of business owners or operators and secondary, post-secondary, and technical educational leaders.
