News of murder of Sarah B. Hart revives rules lived by in city

Although violent crime has not been as big a factor here and it's easy to let down guard, the tragedy this week is a reminder that terrible crimes can happen, even here. Children should be taught self protection measures also. It's a fine line to do so, and not live in fear everyday either Jennifer Parker writes

By Jennifer Parker

I totally agree with Prof. Dan Phillips.

I was born and grew up the largest part of my life in big city areas of California; moved to Adair Co., KY almost 18 years ago.

When I arrived I still lived with the same "safety" rules I left California with and it was difficult to imagine not having to peer under my car or into the interior before getting into it, or having my keys ready in hand, to jab someone's eye out if necessary-for example.

Today, though I am not so set in those ways. I have always realized that the same crimes can occur here and I likely am a bit more cautious than the natives of this area.

However I do know I have let my guard down after all the years here and hearing of this crime did well up those "rules" I moved here with so many years ago.

The truth is, terrible crime is everywhere and we must not ever live in such a way that we don't think it is not.

The children should be taught self protection measures also. It's a fine line to do so, and not live in fear everyday either.

Such a sad, sad day for our rural communities and my heart breaks greatly for the Hart family. -Jennifer Parker
