News from Adair County School District A-teams

Kyle Castaneda and Leane Blackwelder of the ACHS Academic Team completed a championship sweep of 1st and 2nd overall in the state in Governor's Cup FPS Individual Competition on Tuesday, April 17, 2012.

This adds to the list of firsts for the Academic Team, as Castaneda and Blackwelder became the first Future Problem Solving (FPS) members from Adair County to have captured the top two slots in this category at the State level. In addition ACHS Freshman Amber Turner finished in 8th place in the Middle Grades Division which applies to 7th-9th grade students.

After a month-long evaluation, Governor's Cup officials released the results of this event that took place during the last day of State Finals competition at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington in March. Castaneda was one member of the four-person Adair County FPS team this year who took 3rd place overall at State Finals and had already earned a bid with the team to compete at International Championships in June with his teammates.

Since Castaneda's bid has already been filled as a member of the 4-person team, Blackwelder now earns the bid to Internationals alongside her teammates as a competitor in the individual competition. 9th grader Amber Turner has now completed her second Top 10 finish in this competition since she began competing in 7th grade. In both the team and individual competitions at State Finals this year, Future Problem Solvers had to identify challenges, choose an underlying problem, and develop solutions for a futuristic scenario rooted in the topic of Trade Barriers.

Coach Brett Reliford commented, "We've had this strong run at Future Problem Solving for several years now, and with State Championships so difficult to win in what is regarded as one of the two top competitive states in Future Problem Solving, I always get the same speechlessness and pride like it's the very first time we've won it."

This achievement is, in fact, a first for Adair County High School Academic Team. Not only has Adair finished 1st and 2nd back-to-back for the first time, this will mark the first year that Adair has had a qualifying team and individual booklet advancing to Internationals in the same year.

The Adair County FPS teams will advance to compete at Indiana University, which will serve as this year's host to students competing from around the world from four different continents, also including over 40 of the 50 U.S. states. The competition will take place June 7-June 10, 2012, and will feature a scenario-related problem related to Pharmaceuticals.

The list of those now advancing from Adair County's Academic Team are the following:
Team Booklet: Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Kyle Castaneda, and Sarah McQuaide

Individual Booklet: Leane Blackwelder

Scenario Writing: Heather Jackson, Rebecca Montgomery

Alternate Division FPS Booklet: Amber Turner
The feat of advancing to International Competition now sits at an astounding six years in a row for Adair County's teams, even more remarkable for a school of Adair County's size as compared to the larger competing schools they are up against. At the various levels of this competition, over 250,000 students worldwide all vie for the right to be affiliate champions and advance to the worldwide event. To top it off, Adair County has placed in the top six every single year they have attended with only one finish outside of the Top 5.
