Carl & Juanita Burton: The people honored with new scoreboard He was very active in the Adair County community after retirement here in the 1970s, and was a dedicated volunteer coach at Shepherd Grade Center and at the former Christian Life Center Click on headline for story and photo(s) By Charles Grimsley Chair of the Columbia/Adair Co. Parks & Recreation Board A scoreboard was donated to the Jim Blair Community Recreation Center during a birthday celebration for Ella Burton Culp (formerly of Columbia, KY) on Sunday April 15, 2012, in memory of her parents Carl and Juanita Burton. Carl L. Burton was born in 1916, and raised in Columbia, growing up on an Adair County farm on Hwy 206. His parents were Willie and Janie Burton and he married Juanita Grimes from Mobile, Alabama in 1937. They had five children and eight grandchildren. He worked for 30 years as a supervisor for a heavy equipment construction company in Eastern KY building roads and sub-divisions. After he retired in the '70's he became very active in the community, forming a Bluegrass band (he played the guitar and one of his sons played the banjo) and played for many school events and fund raisers which raised money for athletic uniforms and the lights that were placed on the fields at Shepherd Elementary School. He also coached men and women's softball teams at the former Christian Life Center and served on various school committees. He is remembered as a man committed to working with young people and enjoying the time he spent with them, especially as a coach, and it is for this reason a scoreboard was given in their honor.
