8th Safety Zone 2012: Epic scale dramatization Community/School full scale mock accident involves huge cast with real life policemen, prosecutor, defense attorney and judges, emergency response teams, and high school actors, to carry story fromitragic auto crash involving impaired driver through all its phases to incarceration, pre-trial, and beginning of plea bargaining. Click on headline for full story, names of all involved, and 16-photo album by Ellen Zornes By Ellen Zornes News from Adair County Schools Friday April 6, 2012 Adair County High School juniors participated in the eighth annual "Safety Zone DUI Awareness." The idea for "Safety Zone" came about as an effort to demonstrate to our driving students the importance of driving safely and how alcohol and other drugs can so severely impede their driving abilities. Young drivers just don't seem to understand the immense responsibility that driving entails and how even one drink of an alcoholic beverage or the use of other drugs can have such disastrous consequences. We also highlight the importance of not texting while driving. It is our hope through "Safety Zone" to get the point across to our students. Community always can be counted on to help - and did this time Anytime we want to achieve something on a large scale for our students, we can always count on our community to be part of it, and this is no exception. The help from so many experienced and qualified community people, who share our concern about our young drivers, makes this an event to remember. Officers begin morning with seatbelt check We began the morning with a seatbelt check by law enforcement officers, Kevin Atwood, School Resource Officer with the City Police Department and Constable Jason Rector. A little later, our students watched a full scale mock accident involving an impaired driver who causes the crash that involves injuries and fatalities. The accident scene is very realistic with our entire community law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire departments, Air Evac helicopter, coroner and funeral homes participating. We are so thankful to live in a community that is so concerned about its youth. Mock arrest of classmate who portrayed DUI driver Following the accident scene, our students watched the mock arrest of one of their fellow classmates as the DUI driver. He was arrested, handcuffed and taken to Jailer Rick Wilson who booked, fingerprinted and jailed him. Then our legal community took over the scenario as JD Zornes served as the offender's defense attorney, while Commonwealth Attorney, Brian Wright, prosecuted the DUI driver with Judge Michael Loy presiding. The attorneys and judge also explain to the students what is happening legally and why during the hearing. We feel it's important to let our kids know that when a DUI accident occurs, especially one involving a fatality, it doesn't end at the accident site. Prominent community leaders were presenters The rest of the school day was spent with more community people presenting different types and scenarios of safety issues of which our students need to be aware. Our presenters were Jonathon Beams, Brandon Harvey, Lorne Holler, Mary Holler and Jane Potts, Breeding Volunteer Fire Department; Jaime White and Debbie Dunn, Youth Services Center and Judy Drake LWC practicum student; Jason Rector, Constable; Sandra Watt and Tiffany Quales, Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control; Ashley Hardwick, Adanta Substance Abuse Counselor; Michelle Moore, Bank of Columbia; Jan Atwood, Court Designated Worker; Shamarie Claiborne, Court Designated Worker Field Office; Columbia City Police Officers, Kevin Atwood, Tracy McCarol, Drew Conn and Bill Bailey; and Aimee Weddle, Adanta Regional Prevention Center. We hold "Safety Zone" as close as possible to the prom. It is so important that our students be aware of the devastating effects that driving under the influence or driving distracted as in texting can have. We want our kids to be safe! Safety Zone is a collaborative effort "Safety Zone" is a collaborative effort between Adair County Schools and sectors of our community such as Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Ambulance Service, Volunteer Fire Departments, Air Evac, Coroner, the Adair County Medical Community, the Adair County Legal Community, A.C.T.I.O.N. Generation, KY-ASAP (Agency for Substance Abuse Policy), Grissom Martin Funeral Home, Stotts Phelps McQueary Funeral Home, Sherman Burton's Car Care, Susan Minton, Lindsey Wilson College, who applies theatrical makeup for our mock victims and portrays the mother of the deceased victim at the scene and Brandon and Terry Harvey who coordinate the mock accident. All their efforts are greatly appreciated! Several High school students participate as victims of the accident We also had several high school students we would like to thank who participated as victims of the accident: Brea Blair, Sara Bragg, Lucas Coffey, Karli Jessie and Brooklyn Wilson. Reminder: Project Graduation is May 18 We would also like to remind everyone of Project Graduation, the safe alcohol free and drug free graduation event that will take place immediately following ACHS graduation on Friday, May 18, 2012 and will end at 1:30amCT. Again, community support is what allows us to have Project Graduation for our graduating seniors and juniors. If you would like to volunteer to help with Project Graduation or would like to make a contribution, please call 384-3400.
