Irene Burton Pendleton, Adair Co., KY (1919-2012)

She was the matriarch of a large, distinguished Adair County Family. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women's Group. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at Aaron Medical Center, Adair Memorial Hospital, and Westlake Cumberland Hospital for approximately 25 years. Upon retirement from nursing, she spent her years assisting her husband in raising beef cattle and in maintaining a farm life. She was active in the Adair County Republican Party and served as its president for some time. She was an early postmistress of a rural store in Vester, KY. This Kentucky colonel was a lover of poetry who enjoyed reciting poetry as a means of expounding a religious philosophy of life. She was a care taker of all who came into her life, especially her children and grandchildren

Irene Burton Pendleton, age 92, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 10:20 PM at Summit Manor.

Funeral services will be Sunday, April 8, 2012, at 2pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, withRev. Steve Pescosolido & Rev. William Davenport the officiating clergy. Interment will be in the Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. The family request visiting after 4:30pmCT on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

She was born October 17, 1919, in Adair County. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Lenora McGaha Burton. She died Thursday, April 5, 2012, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 92 years, 5 months, and 22 days.

She was the widow of Clyde Pendleton who preceded her in death on October 24, 1998.

Mrs. Pendleton was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women's Group. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at Aaron Medical Center, Adair Memorial Hospital, and Westlake Cumberland Hospital for approximately 25 years. Upon retirement from nursing, she spent her years assisting her husband in raising beef cattle and in maintaining a farm life. She was active in the Adair County Republican Party and served as its president for some time. She was an early postmistress of a rural store in Vester, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters: Lydia Redmon, Freeda Snead, Ila Coffey, and by a granddaughter, Dr. Valerie Wilson, and by two sons- in- laws, Dan C. Wilson & Dwayne Franklin.

She is survived by the following:
  • Three daughters: Sue Pendleton Wilson of Bowling Green, KY; Janet K. Forbes of Louisville, KY; Dr. Patricia Anne Franklin of Louisville, KY

  • And by three sons: John R. Pendleton of Columbia, KY; Tommy Clyde Pendleton of Columbia, KY; Doyle Pendleton of Lexington, KY

  • Nine grandchildren : Donna Rae White, Karin Pendleton Forbes, Gabe Pendleton, Joshua Pendleton, Tracy Green, Stephanie Moresco, Kristen Parsons, Anthony Pendleton, Andrew Pendleton

  • Eleven great grandchildren

  • and four great-great grandchildren
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to the Trinity United Methodist Women's group and contributions may be left at the funeral home or at the church.
