Sara Melton completes undergraduate research at WKU The Adair County High School graduate will complete BS degree at WKU in 3 years. She plans a career in medicine. She's the daughter of Gary and Ann Melton of Columbia, KY Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Rachel Thornton Sara K. Melton of Columbia, KY has completed undergraduate research on FMR1 (Fragile X) Gene at Western Kentucky University. Sara did a one-year study on the Fragile X mental retardation gene using the model organism "Drosophila," and the gene's FMR1 & DFMR1 in the molecular genetics lab of Dr. Anjay Srivastiva. Sara will be running a screen on her genetic manipulations in the summer of 2012 to track factors involved behind the failure of the FMRP protein expression required for proper neural development. Ms. Melton is set to graduate in December of 2012 after only three years with a bachelors of Science degree (Biology Major, Chemistry minor/pre-med concentration) from Western Kentucky University. She is the daughter of Gary and Ann Melton of Columbia, Ky and a graduate of Adair County High School. While newly engaged, Sara was also recently named President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and was featured in the WKU Hilltopper Student Organization Highlight Newspaper. When interviewed about her future plans Sara said: "I definitely want to attend medical school in the state of Kentucky, and at this point I want to pursue a career in general surgery. It's almost shameful that I've taken maximum hours every semester to be able to graduate early, and now I don't have any major travel plans or anything. Truth is, I've had the opportunity to stand bedside and observe some of the best surgeons in the state perform, and I'm really just ready to have a go at it myself. I guess, though, it's time to hang up my scrubs for awhile and find something to head down the aisle in. 2013 is going to be a huge year for me, hopefully I'll be starting medical school, and I get to marry my college sweetheart and absolute love of my life, I'm the luckiest girl alive!"Sara's research is to be submitted for presentation and display at the Kentucky Academy of Science. -Rachel Thornton This story was posted on 2012-03-29 18:21:03
