News from Lindsey Wilson College

BARBOURVILLE, KY - In its longest game of the season, the Lindsey Wilson College baseball team outlasted host Union (KY) College 8-6 in 12 innings today at Jerry W. Carey Stadium.

The Blue Raiders -- who extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games -- never trailed in the game, but had to fight off a determined Union club on a number of occasions. The loss snapped the Bulldogs' five-game winning streak.

The mid-week game appeared ripe for a high-scoring affair, as Lindsey Wilson (22-10) was playing less than 24 hours after a doubleheader sweep of Asbury (KY) and Union was playing for the third straight day.

In addition to both teams diving deep into the rotation, a brisk wind blowing out only added to the thoughts of an offensive day.

The first inning proved the offensive theory true as both teams posted four runs in their first at-bat of the day.

Lindsey Wilson's Leandro Perez led off the game with a single and later scored on Manuel Alonso's RBI single to give the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead. Perez finished the day 2-for-6 at the plate to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Following an Alonso stolen base -- one of four on the day for the Blue Raiders -- Jeff Kerian provided an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Manuel Ozoria followed Kerian with a two-run home run -- his third of the season -- to push the Blue Raider lead to 4-0.

The Bulldogs (17-15) responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning off Lindsey Wilson starter Jeremy Greene. Union took advantage of Greene's early wildness -- he had a walk and a hit batsman in the inning -- to tie the game at 4-4.

Following the first inning explosion, the pitching caught up with the hitting as each team managed just one more run over the next nine innings.

While Union used a host of pitchers, Greene was stellar over his next 6-2/3 innings of work. After allowing four runs on three hits in the first inning, Greene allowed just one run while scattering six hits for the remainder of his outing.

Lindsey Wilson grabbed the 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth as Alonso singled and later scored on a Union error. The Bulldogs recorded four miscues during the game.

Greene appeared to be in complete control entering the bottom of the eighth inning with the one-run lead. He had retired nine straight batters. But, Union's Nelson Price blasted his second home run of the season to tie the game at 5-5.

After retiring the next two Union batters in the inning, Greene allowed a hit and issued a walk to put the potential winning run in scoring position. Daniel Pulliam came on in relief of Greene and retired the last batter in the inning to keep the game at 5-5.

Greene did not figure in the decision while going 7-2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out six.

After a scoreless ninth and 10th innings, Lindsey Wilson once again grabbed a lead as Tyler Bernard doubled home Drew Barrett for the 6-5 lead. Bernard and Barrett each had two hits on the day.

Pulliam (5-1) allowed a pair of hits in the bottom of the 11th, but a Lindsey Wilson error helped the Bulldogs tie the game for the third time.

Lindsey Wilson seized the lead for good in the 12th as the Blue Raiders scored twice thanks to Barrett's two-run single. Barrett finished the day 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. He reached base five times -- he also walked three times -- during the game.

Union had thoughts of its fourth comeback of the day as the first two Bulldogs reached base with singles. Pulliam refused to give in this time as he struck out the next two batters and forced a fly ball out to left field to secure the win.

Pulliam picked up the win while pitching 4-1/3 innings in relief. He allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out two Union hitters.

Union's Tyler Brown -- one of seven Bulldog pitchers on the day -- suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits.
