Oxalis formal name is Oxalis Triangularis April Shepperd writes: The formal name of this plant is Oxalis Triangularis, named because of its leaf shape (almost perfect geometric triangle). It is also known as a False Shamrock, Purple or Burgundy Shamrock. It is in the Wood Sorrel Family. This plant's color shades range from burgundy purple to bordeaux dark red. It is an edible perennial plant eaten around the world. Native Americans used the plant for various reasons including as a medicine, food source and aphrodisiac. The leaves open and close in response to light levels - opening in high ambient light (in the day) and closing at low light levels (at night). --April ShepperdComments re photo 44398 Name that Flower Other name of Irish Purple Sinkflower This story was posted on 2012-03-26 03:26:58
