LWC Men defeat Rio Grande in MSC tournament

Darren Ballou scores final points of game

From Lindsey Wilson College

Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson College found a way to win despite a lackluster performance, beating ninth-seeded Rio Grande (Ohio) 51-48 on Friday afternoon, March 2, 2012 in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, in the Frankfort Convention Center, 405 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY.

The Blue Raiders, playing as the top seed for the first time in program history, nearly played itself into a quick exit after missing their first nine shots of the game.

After the 8-0 deficit to start the game, Josh White came in off the bench to score seven points and help pull Lindsey Wilson back into the game.

The Blue Raiders fought back for a 24-23 lead at halftime and hung around for the rest of the game.

Rio Grande pulled ahead by as many as five points in the second half, but over the final 3:16 of the game never scored another point after a basket by Shaun Gunnell.

With just under two minutes to play, Justin Archie went to the line and hit a pair of free throws to give Lindsey Wilson its first lead since that halftime score.

Darren Ballou scored the game's final points with 21.6 seconds left on another pair of free throws as Rio Grande's three in the final seconds fell short.
