Storm sight brings back memories of Russell Co., Damron's Creek

A LONGING FOR HOME: Melissa G. Rexroat Craigmiles lived near Poplar Grove Road. Sight of downed power lines, big tree down on the Cunningham Place brings back memories of her family, and her dad, Oris Rexroat -'He was a darling of a man, she says - and she remembers that the big tree uprooted was likely at least a century old. The image rekindled a dream to own another farm on Damron's Creek Road, the spectacularly scenic byway between the Dunnville Road in Adair County and the North US 127 area of Russell County, KY, to be back among her beloved extended family of Coopers, Rexroats, Tillers, Foleys and Scaleses. 'I really miss Russell Springs so much,' she says.
There's a plea for more photos from the storm. We hope readers will share them. CM's additional photos, this morning, are limited. -EW

By Melissa G Rexroat-Craigmiles

Hello Mr Waggener. I read this column in the Columbia site newspaper on line every day. I cried when I saw this photo. I lived across the road from the house at the crest of the hill as it turns into new Poplar Grove Road.

I lived there in 1979 -1980 with my maternal grandmother Flossie Foley. She lived in the first house off north 127 and Webbs Crossroads.

She died when I was 13 and I lived with her then.

In 1980 I attended Russell County Elementary 7th and 8th grade.

My dad is buried farther out that road on Damrons Creek Road at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

I have worried all day if his tombstone was damaged. My parents owned the big two story white house just past the cemetery for nearly 54 years.

My dad died of leukemia in 2001 at age 84. My mom and I decided to auction his farm and home off in 2003.

My mother had lived there since she got married in 1946. it was her first home. We sold it and it broke all our hearts to let it go. Someone bought it - the 4 bedroom two story house at the top of Damrons Creek hill. And then it resold in 2004 or 2005.

My mom got real ill and wasput in a nursing home. And I got married in 2007. I havent been down home to Russell Springs in 4 years ... live in Southern Indiana in Clarksville 8 miles from Lousville and my husband James is Memphis, Tennessee born and raised.

I took him to Russell Springs when were engaged, and he didn't like it down there at all.

He didn't want to live in Russell Co. My dream is to own another farm on Damrons Creek Road. Everyone on Damrons Creek knew my dad Oris. He was a darling man. He loved the farm in Russell Springs, but in 1959 they had bought a small home in Louisville's south end at Fairdale community and they kept both the house and the farm on Damron's creek and the home in Fairdale.

I grew up between both. My dad and mom and brother were born on Damrons Creek Road in the Webbs crossroads community of russell springs. My 2nd cousin is a Disc Jockey on WJRS, Mike Scales. His grandmother and my dad were brother and sister.

And I loved Russell Springs all my life. I am 45 old and have no children. My dad when he got ill he said he didn't want to be buried in Russell Springs he wanted to be buried in Louisville, KY where he lived 50 years, but my Mom and brother decided he should be buried next to where my maternal grandparents, Foleys and his parents are buried are in the same cemetery. All our relatives and my cousins and aunts and uncles and great grandparents Foleys are all buried in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church cemetery on Damrons Creek Road.

When I saw the storm damage, I cried sitting here in my apartment in Clarksville, Ind. because the picture you took of the house at the crest of the hill was the old Cunningham place home. And the tree that uprooted in the yard was most likely there when my dad grew up 93-94 years ago in Russell Springs. when he was born. He was born in 1916.
I was born when he was 50 years old. I was born in Lousville downtown but my heart was always in Russell Springs. Both sets of grandparents lived there and aunts and uncles, cousins - are all my relatives and so many more. everyone on damrons creek knew my dad and his brother Hollie Rexroat who died in 2001 also of cancer.

My whole family is from there and I really miss Russell Springs so much. I work over here in Indiana and go to school college full time at Indiana Wesleyan University. My husband works in a steel plant in Lousiville's west end and also is a full time student at the same college. we are studying business....

I just pray for all of Russell Springs and I hope and pray that damrons creek and that road was not critically damaged, I knew all the people out that rd. joe wilson and faye. And my cousin Ronald Rexroat in The Millerfields. I am concerned about that area. I hope more pictures are printed of the storm that went through Russell Springs. I pray it didn't do damage at Mt/ Calvary cemetery where my beloved daddy and beloved grandparents are buried. And I pray my former home at 1946 Damrons Creek Road was not damaged. Whoever lives in my parents big house surely got to the basement. it was a wonderful large two story house and had a nice unfinished basement... so I hope the damage didn't hit that direction.

It worries me so.. I miss it down there. and I will always have a part my life spent there and I love Russell County. I have friends on facebook now from Columbia and Adair and Russell springs and Webbs Crossroads, and my cousin Mike Scales and several friends from down there are on my facebook page. And I hope there are more photos; I can't drive down there right now. I have nowhere to stay, actually, down there since the home was auctioned almost 8 yrs ago. But I have a lot of relatives in the Webbs Crossroads community and friends. and I hope to see more pictures to see what damage was done. I am so saddened about Patty Ridge. I used to drive out that road all the time down there. I knew a lady, I can't remember her name, but her home was on Patty Ridge in the Webbs Crossroads community had been hit 4 times and her cows were killed - that was back in 1995... I was at her home on Patty Ridge in 1995 and a tornado had knocked her home off its foundation it was unsafe to walk in the two story home down there.

PS - Congrats on the new grandbaby. She is lovely. If that is your grandbaby tell the parents congratulations. Can you all get some more photos of the area. I am so worried about Damrons Creek Road and new Poplar grove Road off north 127 there at Webbs Crossroads and what damage was done. We had no storm here we escaped it this time. a tornado hit a month ago here in Clarksville and breezed right past my apt I heard it sounded like a train and hit Walmart parking lot and did damage it was mild but a confirmed tornado... thank you so much. --Melissa G Rexroat-Craigmiles

Webbs X-Roads Storm Feb. 29, 2012: Along US 127

2012-02-29 - US 127 N. of Webbs X-Roads, Russell Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
A large number of South Kentucky RECC linemen
were at this location on US 127 north of Webb's Cross roads restoring down powerlines. A large tree was uprooted at the home on the crest of the hill, and roofing had been sheared away in high winds/tornado which struck the area today. The house on the hill, is the old Cunningham place, and, writer Melissa Rexroat-Craigmiles writes, the uproated tree was around when her late father, Oris Rexroat, was born. The road to the left is New Poplar Grove Road, she writes.

Storm upends 100 year old tree

2012-03-01 - US 127 at New Poplar Grove Road, Russell Springs, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
This windshielded picture
does indicate the enormous size of the big tree (oak?) in the front yard of the old Cunningham place Melissa Rexroat-Craigmiles writes was around when she was growing up across US 127 on Poplar Grove Road. The photo was taken Wednesday afternoon, February 29, 2012.
