Birthdays: The Men Who Saved Leap Year

Knight errant is righing a wrong: Leap Year Birthdays on CM with aid of webmaster - and with a special thanks to the inspirational Robert Osborne and his video, 'Hey, Lone Ranger'

By Ed Waggener

Finally help on the great injustice on listings for Leap Year February 29 birthdays. And not one day too soon. A Very Anonymous but very Reliable Operative writing under the cover of the code name D.Q., noticed a curiosity - a paucity of Leap Year February 29 birthdays.

Thanks to his work, and database magic performed by Pen CM is well on its way obliterating another injustice, another windmill is whupped.

DQ wrote a few weeks back:
Earlier today I scanned through the February Celebrations and noticed that only two birthdays are listed for February 29th. Ever being the knight errant in search of a windmill at which to tilt,

I called up my old friend Sancho and away on a-windmill tilting jaunt we went. A mere 27,789 names (the number of birth certificates issued in Adair County from 1911 through 1999) and four bloodshot eyes later, Sancho and I are proud to present CM with - drum roll please!! nine additional names.

(We actually found 11 names but one was poser, a pretender to the throne and not worthy of mention in connection with True Adair Countians; another was one of the two names already on CM's list. At any rate, we hope this massive number doesn't increase your overhead by forcing you to hire more minions. These first five names go in the "in memory" listings for February 29th (date in parenthesis is the birth year):
  • Finnis R. Burton (1944)
  • Mattie E. Streeval DeSpain (1940)
  • William H. Dixon (1924)
  • John E. Streeval (1920)
  • Luther O. Wilson (1924)
This gentleman is, to the best of my knowledge, still on this side of the Great Divide: Allen D. Curry.

These three names are problematic in that Sancho & I don't know if they are amongst the living, nor do we know the married name (if any) of any of the three. 1) Eva M. Montgomery. 2) Elva Morgan 3) Betty S. Smith

Yours in Windmill Tilting and Minionmongering,
D.Q. & Sancho
And so it is that very early this morning, at midnight God's Time, readers far east of here were greeted to at least an acceptable number of Leap Year, February 29, 2012, birthdays.

While we doubt there could possibly be any more in the 7-County Area of Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, we'll relish humble pie and post additional ones with as much fan-fare as we can muster on the busiest day of the year for behind the scenes factotum(s) and minion(s) who toil in voluntary servitude in the silent hope someone will acknowledge how underappreciated they are - next to yourself, revered reader, they might be the most lonely little petunias in an onion patch since Arthur Godfrey. If you do nothing else, pat yourself on the back. At least CM commiserates with you!

Just in case there is/are ary another/others February 29 birthdays, please submit using any Contact/Submit button.

It is entirely possible the D.Q.'s courage to make a better world was inspired by Robert Osborne's Hey, Lone Ranger, not yet the National Anthem of Dynamic Russell and Adair Counties, but that surely ought to be considered.
