Swinging Bridge over Crocus Creek holds unforgettable memory

There was a funeral, and the creek was too high to cross to the Grider Family Cemetery except by way of swinging bridge See Swinging Bridge over Crocus Creek, CM file photo by Linda Waggener of the Grider Swinging Bridge, spoken of in this fascinating story by Pastor Paul Patton.

By Paul Patton

There is a wonderful swinging bridge on Highway 704 in Cumberland County. It is across Crocus Creek and leads to the home of some of the Griders as well as the Grider Family Cemetery.

This bridge has been photographed and shown in various papers, magazines, etc. and it is well worth the drive just to get a good look at this piece of workmanship.

One of my most unique ministry experiences involved the crossing of this swinging bridge.

When Mr. Homer Grider died in December, 1990 Crocus Creek was running too deep and swift to cross it in order to reach the cemetery.

The only way across was to use the swinging bridge. This was easy enough for the people ,but getting the casket across was a challenge.

Several strong men lifted the casket onto the bridge and I watched Jesse Grider push his father's casket the full length of the swinging bridge to where the casket bearers were waiting on the other side to lift it down and proceed to the cemetery.

That memory will forever be etched in my mind and I only wish someone had been there with a movie camera to capture that moment for posterity.

I have conducted hundreds of funerals but this is one of the most memorable funerals of my lifetime and I don't ever expect to see another casket being pushed across a swinging bridge.
