News from Col. William Casey School

I am thrilled with the new iBooks Author from Apple and couldn't wait to download it the day it was released. As has been discussed in the media several times, the district's funding for textbooks has been cut to basically $0 over the past several years. At CWC this has resulted in the need for teachers to create math curriculum to meet the new Common Core Standards in Math. I immediately started playing with the idea of combining our "created curriculum" into a math eBook for use in the all primary classrooms.

We currently have over 40 iPads in use at CWC with hopes of acquiring more in the future. Most of the funding for the iPads has come from grant sources outside the state funding. These include Camp Casey (21st Century Funds), Title I, IDEA, and KERA Preschool. Before someone asks, none of these funds can be used for regular textbook purchases.

Our students (and teachers) have fallen in love with the ease of use and impact on learning of these tools. They are used by all of our students, ages 3 and up. As a matter of fact, our youngest students at times have shown our staff how to use or work a particular app. I have no doubt that eBooks and interactive tablets are the future of education. Also, from my point of view there is no doubt that Apple is leading the way in this endeavor.
