Schuyler D. McGaha, Adair Co., KY (1923-2012)

A giant figure among Adair Countians has departed our lives here. Schuyler D. McGaha was the patriarch of a large, highly distinguished Northeast Adair County, KY, family. He was a member of New Hope Separate Baptist Church, and a field representative for Southern Wood Piedmont Company. He was an original quartet member of the Crossroads Quartet which was formed in 1960 and performed in churches and gospel singings throughout the area as well as other states. He was a Veteran of World War II, and will be accorded full military honors by Columbia VFW Post 6097. He was a member of The Adair Gideon Camp. A family man, with steadfast adherence to his principles and his church, his marriage of over 65 years to Barbara J. Bryant McGaha provided an exemplary role model and endowed South Central Kentucky with a beautiful legacy which lives in his family.

Schuyler D. McGaha age 88 years of Liberty Road, Columbia, KY passed away Wednesday January 18, 2012 at 4amCT, at Summit Manor Health and Rehab Center Columbia, KY.

Funeral services are Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 1pmCT, at New Hope Separate Baptist Church, 10706 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY. Clergy, with Bro. David Coffey and Bro. Brandon Glanzer officiating. Interment will follow by the church in New Hope Cemetery with full military honors by local VFW Post 6097. Visitation wil be after 4pmCT, Friday, January 20, 2012, and after 10:30amCT, Friday at the funeral home, and after 11amCT until time for the service at the church.



Pallbearers: Brian McGaha, Brandon Glanzer, Tim Popplewell, John Houk, Travis Bryant and Ronnie McGaha.

Honorary Pallbearers: Randy Wooldridge, Dave Powell, Lucian Ware, Jimmy McGaha, Gary Lawless, Patsy Kemp and Barbara Jones

He was born on October 21, 1923 in Adair County, KY. He was the son of the late Alfred and Mattie Williams McGaha. He died Wednesday January 18, 2012, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 88 years, 2 months, and 28 days.

Survived by his wife of over 65 years, Barbara J. Bryant McGaha of Columbia, KY and the following:
  • Two sons: Senator Vernie McGaha and wife Connie of Russell Springs, KY; and Darryl McGaha of Columbia, KY

  • One daughter: Denise Glanzer of Campbellsville, KY

  • One sister: Maxine McGaha of Campbellsville, KY

  • Four grandchildren: Brian McGaha and wife Jeannie, Susan Popplewell and husband Tim; Jennifer Houk and husband John, and Brandon Glanzer and wife Megan

  • Five great Grandchildren: Luke Popplewell, Braxton Glanzer, Bryant Glanzer, Skyler Houk and Taylor Houk.

  • Special caregivers: Gary Lawless, Patsy Kemp and Barbara Jones

  • Several nieces, nephews

  • And a host of other relatives and friends survive
He was a member of New Hope Separate Baptist Church, a field representative for Southern Wood Piedmont Company. He was an original quartet member of the Crossroads Quartet which was formed in 1960 singing in churches and gospel singings locally, surrounding counties and other states and was a Veteran of World War II. He was a member of The Adair Gideon Camp.

Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donation to New Hope Church Building Fund and can be made at the funeral home Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
