Query: Judge Lawless seeks more on Weed Civil War Reunion By Scott Lawless The accompanying photograph is in the possession of my family, and I understand it to be a photograph of some Civil War Veterans from Adair County. The only persons identified on the back of the photo are: Joel Moore (front row, 3rd from left); Lewis Moore (front row, far right); Nathan Moore (my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, 2nd row, 1st from the left); Rob Coffey (2nd row, 4th from the left); and Amus England (2nd row, 7th from the left). I am wondering whether any of your readers might be able to shed some light on where or when this photo may have been taken. Lewis Moore was born in 1837, Nathan Moore in 1840, and Joel Moore in 1844, and the three were brothers. It would appear to me that the gentlemen depicted would be in their 60's or perhaps in their 70's, which would date this photograph to maybe around 1910. The photograph would have been taken prior to the death of Joel Moore in 1921. While this photograph may have been taken at a family or community function, I am wondering if instead it would have been posed during a reunion of area Civil War soldiers. Such events would have been common, as evident from the reports appearing in the Adair County News at the time. One report, appearing in the August 16, 1911 edition of that newspaper, in the community news from "Rowes X Road", states: "Well I am at home again from Weed Adair county, Ky., where I attended the Old Soldiers reunion. It was by far the best one of my life; there were about fifty old soldiers there, and such preaching, singing, praying and shouting, I never heard before; just a regular old time camp meeting. The soldiers ate coffee, bacon and sow belly, two days on the ground, all credit is due Joel Moore and the committee for the way they managed the camp grounds, the very best order prevailed all the way through."The report concluded with a list of thirty-seven soldiers who attended, along with their units, and included the Moore brothers and Amus England as being in attendance. - -Scott Lawless The writer, the Hon. Jeffrey Scott Lawless, Somerset, KY, is Judge, 28th Judicial District, Pulaski & Rockcastle District Court, has many relatives in Adair and Russell Counties, also including the Loy and Cole families. The Weed Reunion was held in his Cole family ancestral region of Adair County, KY. Any help information on Query will be appreciated. - CM This story was posted on 2012-01-05 04:41:57
