News from the Adair Co., KY, School District

Like Adair students, the members of the Board of Education must also do their homework.

Once a month, Floyd Burton, Marsha Walker, Mike Harris, Rebecca Turner and Joseph Payne receive a thick packet in the mail. It is full of financial reports, test data, and a long list of materials from the state and federal government that each must study and decipher before the monthly school board meeting. And while they don't have to take tests, each must also commit to ample classroom instruction in the form of regular state update training.

The five board members conduct business at least once a month, but you'll also see them at ballgames, graduations, band competitions, site-based council meetings and other school and civic events. These individuals are an important and essential link between the school district and the Adair County community.

Their task is not an easy one. They must make difficult decisions in the face of shrinking revenues and tough times locally. They take substantial time out of their regular lives to help ensure the individual child in Adair County Schools gets what he or she needs to succeed in school and beyond.

So why do they do it? Many school board members across the state say things like:
"You have to be willing to put in the extra hours to educate yourself. You can't continually rely on other people to spoon feed you information."

"There's no question you have to have a heart for children. If you don't have that you don't need to be a school board member."
Adair County's five school board members will be recognized at the January 17, 2011, school board meeting. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7pmCT, at the Board Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. The meetings are open to the public. -A.W. REED.
