ACHS Academic Team finishes Fall League undefeated Click on headline for full story, list of Academic Team members, photo(s) News from Adair County School District Submitted by Chad Parnell The ACHS Academic Team concluded the Fall portion of its competitive season on Monday, November 28, capturing the Green River Regional Academic League Championship once again. The team put together an impressive string of wins from September through November and finished undefeated in both Varsity and Junior Varsity Quick Recall. Adair County also garnered the highest number of top five finishes in the league in individual written assessment competitions. In the Social Studies exam, Adair controlled the Top 5 leaderboard by claiming four of the five top positions in the league. Leading the way was Eddie Franklin (12th grade) who won 1st Place in the competition and fellow Senior Kyle Mann who finished closely behind in 2nd. Competing for the first time, Cody Giles (11th grade) and Thomas Murrell (11th grade) finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Roslin Wilson (11th grade) finished strong as well and was one question away from joining the top 5 contingency to complete the five-member sweep of the Social Studies category. Heather Jackson (11th grade) and Matt Rogers (10th grade) led the team to a sweep of the top two places in both the Language Arts and Arts and Humanities written assessments. Jackson, a State Finalist as a sophomore last year in Language Arts, secured the highest single score of the competition in her 1st Place finish in the category. This marked her first year competing in Arts and Humanities as well, claiming the top honor in that category also. Likewise, Matt Rogers' finish in 2nd place behind teammate Jackson was his first year as a competitor in Language Arts. Kyle Mann followed up his impressive Social Studies ranking by getting 4th Place in Arts and Humanities as well. Coach Brett Reliford commented on the sweeps in those areas: "The Social Studies, Language Arts, and Arts and Humanities categories are three areas we've been especially proud of for several years now. When other teams play us, they know we're going to cover the spectrum of all that gets asked about, but those three categories are going to be ones we're particularly well-versed in, and the control we had on the leaderboard throughout the season makes us all proud when we see our work has paid off." Eddie Franklin also led the team in a 2nd Place finish in Mathematics. Franklin has been a consistent Top 5 finisher during his four years of academic competition at the high school level. Joining him in the rankings was Jesse Woods (12th grade) who finished 4th Place in the event for his first Top 5 finish. Joining the upperclassmen in Top 5 finishes were 9th graders making waves in their first high school competition. Timothy Watson was among the 9th graders leading the charge, bursting onto the scene and claiming 1st Place in the league in Science. Joining the Adair County top ranks in Language Arts and Arts and Humanities were Freshmen teammates Jessi Taylor and Anna Parson. Taylor earned 5th place in Language Arts and Parson earned 5th place in Arts and Humanities. Jessi Taylor also placed in the Top 5 in Composition as Adair County's lone entrant this year, earning 4th place in the standings. Brittany Curry, another 9th grader that has been very active in his first year, notched a 5th Place finish in Mathematics among league competitors. Coach Reliford bragged on the early impact and work ethic of the 9th grade members by noting, "We've had quite a bit of interest this year from Freshmen who have joined us. There is a humongous increase in difficulty in the types of things they get asked about at the high school level compared to middle school, and they've gradually brushed aside the initial intimidation of that, and it showed in these league finishes. They have been receptive and attentive in practices. It takes a while for some of the tougher material to sink in, but these early successes can be a sign of more good things to come if our 9th graders continue at the rate they're going." In total, Adair claimed four of the five award slots in both Social Studies and Arts and Humanties and three of the five slots available in Math and Language Arts, continuing the team's reputation as league powerhouse. Team members and participants include the following: Seniors: Eddie Franklin. Audra Turner. Kyle Mann. Ashley Neat. Jesse Woods. The team has also competed in two national qualifying tournaments at this point in the season, finishing in the top tier brackets of each event. Adair has already posted victories over reigning regional champions from across the state. The team's next event will be Beta Convention Quiz Bowl tournament on December 9-10, 2011.
