Christmas in Columbia 2011: A huge success

Starting with a best ever traditional Columbia Rotary Club Sausage Breakfast, followed by the tremendously successful Adair Heritage Association's Old Fashioned Christmas at the Historic Adair County Courthouse, and continuing with the big Santa Claus attraction at Lindsey Wilson, through the longest, most enjoyable parade under the lights through Downtown Columbia, with Mike Meyer as parade marshal and the thrill of the combined Adair County High School and Lindsey Wilson bands - it's hard to imagine a more successful Christmas in Columbia. -CM
'Christmas in Columbia this year showed what can be accomplished when individuals and groups in the community dare to become involved - RON HEATH, C/AC Chamber President

By Ron Heath, President, Columbia/Adair Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, I want to express our sincere thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this Christmas in Columbia one of the best ever. It was refreshing to see so many individuals and groups all pitch in to make the weekend such a success. What a way to kick off the Christmas season! The Chamber would be remiss if it didn't say a special thanks to the groups that worked so hard on the weekend.

The Rotary breakfast was a huge success. President Jerry Holt and the rest of the members did a great job of feeding the hungry people who showed up all morning. The Rotary Club is a real asset to this community. Their fundraising efforts help them support worthy projects locally and around the world.

The Adair Heritage Association did a beautiful job of cleaning and decorating the Courthouse. It's never looked better at Christmas. The enthusiasm and energy of the volunteers was contagious. Seeing activity again in the Courthouse is a real step forward in the efforts by fundraising chair Ellen Zornes and the rest of the members of the Adair Heritage Association to preserve this historic building.

The Christmas Carnival at the Holloway Health and Wellness Center drew more than 900 people in the afternoon. The Health and Wellness Center director Joel Peterson, his staff, and all the student volunteers did a beautiful job of transforming the equivalent of three full size basketball courts into a Christmas wonderland. The smiles on the faces of the children when they saw Santa made the work worth all the effort.

Finally, the parade was a huge success. This was one of the longest parades in recent memory. The weather cooperated to bring out a large crowd to view the parade. What a sight it was when Grand Marshal Mike Meyer, father of Medal of Honor winner Dakota Meyer, rode by waving to the crowd. New this year was the champion Adair County High School marching band under the direction of Tom Case marching together with the Lindsey Wilson marching band under the direction of Tim Allen. Few communities in all of Kentucky can match the talent we have right here in Adair County.

Christmas in Columbia this year showed what can be accomplished when individuals and groups in the community dare to become involved. By all counts more than 100 local residents played a part in the success of Christmas in Columbia. With so many people helping the work load isn't too difficult for any one person. This event couldn't have been such a success without the help and support of so many people. The Chamber of Commerce looks forward to next year's Christmas in Columbia being bigger and better than ever.

Thanks to all,

RON HEATH, President
Columbia- Adair County Chamber of Commerce
