State places John Adair with CWC, at top of replacement list John Adair Intermediate School and Colonel William Casey near top of list of schools which need replacing; plans are already under way to replace CWC. Now school board is scurrying to find solution to need to replace second school Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Alan W. Reed Federal Programs/ Media Relations/Adair County Schools A recent assessment detailing conditions of schools around the state indicates that Adair County needs to replace two aging facilities. John Adair Intermediate School now shares Category 5 status with Colonel William Casey Elementary School. The assessment report from The Kentucky Department of Education was conducted by two independent firms, which conducted extensive on-site evaluations in nearly 500 schools throughout the state. In the past, the Department of Education ranked schools in categories ranging from Category 1 to Category 5. According to the state, schools listed Category 5 are the state's neediest. Inspectors hired by the Kentucky Department of Education considered the physical condition of the building, educational suitability and technology readiness. The assessment followed upon the 2010 passage of a bill, in which the lawmakers mandated that the Kentucky Department of Education assess the physical condition, educational suitability and technology readiness of schools in the Commonwealth. The intent is to provide the General Assembly with data that can be used to inform funding decisions. The information can also be used to help districts prioritize and make decisions on which schools to renovate or replace. The Adair County Board of Education is proceeding with plans to replace one of its Category 5 schools, Colonel William Casey Elementary, and will soon have to address the needs of the John Adair Intermediate School, now also listed as the neediest school in the state, according to the report. Superintendent Darrell Treece says, "We just received the state list on Tuesday (November 29, 2011) and were surprised to see John Adair Intermediate as topping the list of Category 5 schools in Kentucky. However, we're well aware John Adair Intermediate is plagued by outdated wiring and an aging heating and cooling system." Superintendent Treece indicated the new assessment would not change the districts commitment to rebuild Casey. "We've got a critical situation over there. The heating system is on the brink of failure and the sewer system continues to fail," he said. Treece says he feels that Col. William Casey Elementary School scored slightly better than John Adair on the assessment report because of the addition of a classroom wing to Col. William Casey in the eighties. Both schools now appear in the states "Top 10 List" "We're in an interesting predicament, "said Treece. The report suggests there is a definite need for a total replacement of two of our buildings. According to the estimates, there is only $75,000 difference between total renovation at John Adair and replacement. It's pretty easy to do the math." Treece went on to say, "While it will be a challenge to deal with the construction of two schools, if the state provides funding it's a good problem to have. ALAN W.
