Hands Extended Thanksgiving 2011: Report and Album 2011's Community Thanksgiving exceeded all expectations. It was a perfect day, with as good a Thanksgiving meal of Turkey, Ham, Dressing, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Green Beans, and all the fixings. Attendance was high, and even the setting, the cafeteria in the Adair County Middle School with its rich heritage and history - it was the cafeteria so many Adair Countians remember in the first Adair County High School Building - was perfect. Those in attendance and participating went across the spectrum of social levels, wealth or lack of it, and means of earning a living or no means. It was a textbook example of The Adair County Way at work. -EW Click on headline for story plus big photo album ColumbiaMagazine.com story The Hands Extended Community Thanksgiving, a huge success at its inception in 2010 grew by an amazing 32% in 2011. In 2010, 296 individuals enjoyed the meal at Columbia Christian Church. In 2011, that number grew to 391!"We provided 391 meals to the community," Sally Kemp, a founding member of Hands Extended, said. "We took meals to The Shelter (this is a shelter for Battered Women), the Adair County Regional Jail and 2nd Chance Outreach Ministries. Last year we provided 296 meals." It was initiated to provide a place for everybody to congregate for Thanksgiving Dinner in much the same spirit as the first Thanksgiving. Everyone, from some of the highest elected officials to some who might have spent Thanksgiving alone, to some who might not have enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast ate together. It was an idea proposed by Sally and Jimmy Kemp, but it quickly grew into an army of volunteers, who, to a person, will tell anyone who will listen that they get much more from their work in this endeavor than they put into it: They receive the greater blessing. This year's committee members and volunteers includes: Shirley Moss - volunteer, Billie Lee - volunteer, Fran Neat - Committee Member, Gina Haynes - volunteer. Diane Dulworth - Committee Member, Tom Dulworth - Committee Member, Jimmy Kemp - Committee Member, Sally Kemp - Committee Member, Josh Redford - Committee Member, Jennifer Redford - Committee Member, Jesse Cook - Committee Member, Penny Case - Committee Member, Glenn Case - Committee Member, Don Neat - volunteer. Hands Extended's fundraising was limited. "We were such good stewards of our money from last year we didn't do any fundraising for this year's meal. It was paid for with last year's money," Sally Kemp said. She said that they are already well along the road to paying for another, hopefully bigger Community Thanksgiving next year. "We had numerous volunteers coming from as far away as Somerset and Amazon's Campground (these individuals live in Minnesota but work at Amazon during the Christmas rush and live in their campers in Campbellsville). We have received follow up comments thanking us for the meal and the opportunity to fellowship with people in this community. One gentleman in particular said he had moved here several months ago and had no relatives in this area. He appreciated the opportunity to get to know some of his neighbors." -SALLY KEMP This story was posted on 2011-12-01 17:39:51
