Sgt. Dakota Meyer officiates at induction of 1st cycling 'Ghost' Excerpt from Lindsey Wilson Cyclings highest honor:' . . . JAMES E. BROWN, shall be known as one of the 'Ghosts', a rider who truly made a difference in their program, a person whose spirit will continue to haunt his program for generations of Lindsey Wilson Cyclists yet to come.' Click on headline for full story plus photo By Dave Grigsby, Coach News from Lindsey Wilson Cycling Team Last night, Monday, November 21, 2011, the Lindsey Wilson Cycling Team inducted its first cyclist into the Order of Deus Ex Machina. Basically, it's a an award we created to be our highest honor. The award was given to Senior James C Brown of Louisville, KY. The award was read by and presented by former LWC Cyclist Dakota Meyer. The full text of the presentation by Sgt. Meyer follows: 'Deus Ex Machina' Every tradition has a beginning. Tonight, Lindsey Wilson College Cycling establishes a new tradition in the form of an award for meritorious conduct and in recognition of cyclist-student-athletes of the highest caliber. Tonight we will induct our very first cyclist into the Order of Deus Ex Machina, or Ghost in the Machine. As cyclists, we recognize that there is a soul within the machinery that is our human form, the machinery that is our team. We also know that the effort and suffering that comes from giving everything we have physically reveals our spirit and allows us to better know and understand and embrace the ghost that dwells within. The cyclist knows that, when deep in the pain cave, we are completely in touch with who we are. It is here that we are truly honest with ourselves. Deus Ex Machina will from this day forth be revered as the highest honor any Lindsey Wilson Cyclist can achieve. It is an award that can only be bestowed upon an athlete in the final semester of their degree, and cannot be attained through athletic performance alone. While awards and honors are earned by defeating opponents, and championships are won by besting all rivals, induction into the Order of Deus Ex Machina can only be attained by those who exhibit both a warrior's spirit, and a servant's heart. This honor is an acknowledgement of the dedication, spirit, and humility of only those individuals that uphold, with pride and vigor, the ideals that our program holds dearest, the ideals of passion and character. Wins and losses, race results and categories will never be factors in deciding induction into this order. Each and every member of the cycling team shall have equal opportunity. We are not honoring perfection, nor seeking it, for those who know no mistakes have no chance to grow, improve, and affect change in their peers through example earned from adversity. Recipients of this honor have consistently displayed their pride and passion for both cycling and Lindsey Wilson College. They have given their all on the bicycle both in practice and in competition. They have put their studies before leisure and they have volunteered their time and energy for the good of their fellow team members when there was no reward awaiting them at task's end. Honorees have taken it upon themselves to extol the virtues of their program to those outside the college and have sought ways to improve and grow the cycling team in a manner that reflects their own love of our college family. Inductees have not faced challenges without fear, but have faced them knowing fear, and charged into the breach carrying that fear with them, refusing to be defined by it. And so it is with great pride and humility that tonight we name our first Ghost Rider to the Order of Deus Ex Machina. From this day forth, JAMES C. BROWN, shall be known as one of the 'Ghosts', a rider who truly made a difference in their program, a person whose spirit will continue to haunt his/her program for generations of Lindsey Wilson Cyclists yet to come.
