John Chowning: Urgent call to action on federal financial aid The outcome of debate in U.S. Congress can seriously affect educational levels and economic well-being in 7-County CM coverage area of Adair, Taylor, Green, Casey, Russell, Cumberland and Metcalfe Counties. Cumberland County native and Lindsey Wilson graduate and supporter John Chowning, Vice President for Church and External Relations and Executive Assistant to the President of Campbellsville University, urges action on the part of area residents to make sure Congress does the right thing. Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University are the major economic engines of Adair and Taylor County, with a combined estimated impact of over $175-200 million on the economies of the two counties. Any significant cuts of federal funding including Pell Grants, for local students, would seriously impact many students attending CU and LWC CM By John Chowing Students at colleges and universities across the United States, including area institutions such as Campbellsville University and Lindsey Wilson College, will be adversely impacted if cutbacks in federal financial aid programs result from the current federal budget debate in Washington. Kentucky, which is a state characterized by lower educational attainment rates and historic lags in our economy, will be hit particularly hard since so many of our students are dependent on federal financial aid programs. Institutions, such as CU and LWC, are providing millions of dollars in financial aid for our students (many of whom are first generation college attending), but federal financial aid is essential if we are to provide an educated and trained workforce - an essential element in today's global economy. Below is an appeal we've made to our students, faculty, staff, and friends at Campbellsville University to express their support of federal financial aid programs to our U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives. The directions are easy to follow to send letters to our elected officials in Washington - for those who would like to express support for these program: As many of you know, there is intense debate about the federal budget in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.Student Aid Alliance Launches Campaign to "Save Student Aid" On October 24, the Student Aid Alliance, a coalition of 74 organizations, including the CCCU, that work to maintain, secure, and expand opportunities for student aid programs, launched a campaign intended to "Save Student Aid." The campaign intends to get as many student aid supporters as possible to sign a Statement of Support that will indicate to elected officials how important student aid is to their constituents. Add your support to this campaign here. -JOHN CHOWNING This story was posted on 2011-11-19 06:25:34
