Mike Meyer will be 2011 Christmas Parade Grand Marshal 'Mr. Meyer is being recognized for choosing to raise Dakota in Adair County and for instilling the values in his son that made him the man he is today.' - RON HEATH Parade will be at traditional time, follow traditional route, but a new Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will take place By Ron Heath, President Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce The Grand Marshal for the Christmas in Columbia parade this year will be Mike Meyer, father of Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer, Adair County's newest hero. Dakota has to be in New York the weekend of the Christmas in Columbia parade. As a result, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has chosen to honor Mike Meyer as the Grand Marshal for the parade this year. As the proud father of Dakota, Mr. Meyer is being recognized for choosing to raise Dakota in Adair County and for instilling the values in his son that made him the man he is today. He has set a wonderful example for other parents that young people raised in Adair County can do and achieve anything they set their minds to, if they get the right encouragement and support from their parents as they grow and mature. We ask that everyone join with members of the Chamber of Commerce in cheering Mr. Meyer as the parade passes by. He is truly deserving of this honor for having raised Dakota to be a role model for young people across the country. In a departure from what's been done previous years the Christmas tree on the square will not be lit before the start of the parade. Instead, during the parade when the Grand Marshall gets to the courthouse square, Mr. Meyer's car will stop long enough for him to light the tree to signify the start of the Christmas season in Columbia. The parade will start at 6pmCT and will follow the traditional route down Jamestown St. around the courthouse square, and then down Burkesville St. to the Sav-A-Lot parking lot. -RON HEATH This story was posted on 2011-11-18 11:31:49
