Good crowd turns out for Walmart Veterans Breakfast A new site after a one year hiatus, the Columbia Walmart Supercenter Veterans Day Program is held at the VFW Hall at the Fairgrounds. It was a very successful revival of a major Columbia tradition Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) by Ed Waggener The tradition of a Veterans Day Breakfast at the Columbia Walmart goes back to the days when it was started at old Walmart location on Jamestown Street. It continued at the new Supercenter at Holladay Place, but, for one reason or another, it was dropped in 2010. It had grown into a major event, and this year the management revived the tradition, but, instead of holding it at the store it was moved to a supremely appropriate setting at the VFW Hall, 411 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. The new location worked. Some 125 -150 veterans and their families came to the event, in a venue where the meal was in a more relaxed setting, and the trappings of military service were already in place. Members of Walmart management still coordinated the logistics and planned the program, led by store manager Carla Thomas, David Johnson and Autrey Jones, and Associates Carmella Mings, Lana Warren, Debra Corbin, Phyllis Payne, Bill Haynes and Shea Koenig. The breakfast of pastries, sausage, biscuits, gravy, jams and jellies, fruit and cereal, and juice, milk and coffee was furnished by the store and included gifts of meat and biscuits from McDonald's; gravy from Betty's OK Country; milk and orange juice from Flavo-Rich, and programs from J & F Variety. Columbia Post 6097 furnished the building, and the presentation of colors was by members of the post Galen Campbell, Stanley Jones, Johnnie Biggs, George Keltner and Ron Holt. Store manager Carla Thomas conducted the veterans introductions and the closing. The opening prayer was given by Dean Roach, minister of the Columbia church of Christ. A welcome was given by radio personality Lisa Fischer, followed by remarks by Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton, and by veteran Dustin Corbin. Special music included the Battle Hymn of the Republic by Shawn Samuel, Sharon and Phyllis Payne and Karen Pescosolido. The flag folding ceremony was led by David Sharp. The local Walmart store gave special thanks to Jennifer Biggs for the use of the sound system and to local media for promoting and covering the breakfast. This story was posted on 2011-11-13 15:27:29
