Downtown Christmas Parade is same day

News from Western Kentucky University

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Kentucky Museum's sixth annual holiday celebration, Christmas in Kentucky, is set for 11am-2pmCT, on Saturday, December 3, 2011. The event features free activities for children and adults, begins right after the Bowling Green Christmas parade with free parking available next to the Kentucky Museum at 1444 Kentucky Street, Bowling Green, KY, on WKU's campus. All activities are free and include ornament making, gingerbread sampling, a scavenger hunt, games and much more.

There will be a magician, carolers, musicians, costumed characters and Big Red. Santa and Mrs. Claus visit with children in the Kentucky Room, and are available for photos. Visitors are encouraged to bring their personal cameras for pictures.

"Christmas in Kentucky is a wonderful family oriented-event," said Kentucky Museum Education Curator and event organizer Christy Spurlock. "Many attend the downtown Christmas parade and then come over to the museum to continue the fun. We have become an annual holiday tradition for many families."

Community members Julie and Charley Pride bring their family every year. "We have been going ever since the first one," Julie Pride said. "We like it because there's a variety of things to do and we can stay together or split up."

Each member of the Pride family enjoys something different about the event. "Will (her son) likes the ornaments that Chemistry does, I like the Redshirts (WKU singers), and Emily (her daughter) likes it all. Charley (her husband) likes that the kids are entertained and even are learning a thing or two," she said.

Mr. Magic will be providing periodic shows with a variety of tricks and jokes. Guests can make different ornaments to take home at the many ornament-making stations with the help of WKU student athletes. Strolling carolers and musicians provide upbeat seasonal music to get participants in the spirit.

Costumed characters in period attire complement exhibits with games and activities for everyone in the family. Visitors can compete in the "Cake Mix Walk" while listening to music from the '50s. In the log house, guests can eat gingerbread and explore life in early Kentucky. Big Red will also be on hand that day for pictures and games.

"This event would not be possible without the hard work of WKU staff, students and volunteers," Spurlock said. "We appreciate all they've done to make this event successful year after year."
