Lindsey Wilson Men's Soccer Wins MSC Tournament title

LWC GOALS: Philip Sandgren. Samuel Asante. RIO GRANDE: Scott Bibby.

By Chris Wells

RIO GRANDE, OH - The Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team backed up its Mid-South Conference regular season title with the tournament championship tonight with a 2-1 win over host University of Rio Grande.

Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson (18-0) captures the program's 11th MSC Tournament title and earns the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament. The national tournament begins on Saturday, November 19 at host sites across the NAIA.

Despite the loss, No. 4-ranked Rio Grande (17-2) will earn an at-large into the national tournament based on their national ranking.

All of tonight's scoring occurred in the opening half.

The Blue Raiders grabbed the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as Samuel Asante scored from deep inside the penalty area.

Almost exactly 20 minutes later, Rio Grande's Scott Bibby scored the equalizer on an unassisted goal to tie the match at 1-1.

Lindsey Wilson's Philip Sandgren scored what would turn out to be the game-winner in the 43rd minute off an Eddy Campbell assist to give the Blue Raiders the 2-1 lead and eventually the win.

Both teams missed chances to add to their scores in the second frame, but Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Yuta Nomura and Rio Grande keeper Jack Marchant turned away each shot. Both keepers ended the night with four saves.

The RedStorm finished the match out-shooting the Blue Raiders 11-7, but Lindsey Wilson was slightly more efficient with six shots on target compared to five from Rio Grande.

Each team will learn on Sunday, November 13, 2011, who its opening round opponent in the NAIA Tournament will be as the NAIA releases the national tournament bracket.
