Jacob Bryant named Columbia United Methodist Youth Minister New Youth Minister is a sophomore at Lindsey Wilson and plans to attend seminary after completing Christian Ministries studies in Columbia. Click on headline for full story and photo By Ed Waggener Jacob Bryant has been named Youth Minister at Columbia United Methodist Church, Rev. Neil Janes, pastor announces. He will work with youth in grades 7-12. "He's our first Youth Pastor in three years," Rev. Janes said, "and we believe his ministry not only will fill a gap in that age group, but will help us serve those of all ages." The new Youth Minister is the son the senior pastor of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, Rev. Eric Bryant. He is a sophomore at Lindsey Wilson College, where he is majoring in Christian Ministries with a minor in psychology. He plans to follow in his father's career path, as Rev. Neil Janes followed that of his father, Rev. Jadell Janes. "After I graduate," Jacob Bryant said, "I am seriously considering attending seminary to further my understanding of my personal faith and enhance my ability to teach about Christianity to youth."But the Youth Minister will play a major role in helping Columbia United Methodist Church continue in its growing service to Downtown Columbia, "He will be singing in next Sunday morning's service," Rev. Janes said. "He's quite a musician. He plays almost any kind of instrument, from the keyboard to horns to drums." Indeed, the range, Jacob said, also includes the trombone and baritone and his favorite instrument, the guitar. Jacob was a member of the Ballard High School Marching band, and, at Lindsey Wilson College, is a member of the school's renowned Lindsey Wilson Singers. He'll also bring an interest in sports to the youth ministry. He's on the tennis team at Lindsey. He'll lead a Sunday School class, among his other duties, but the most ambitious new program will be the institution of a Sunday evening service for the youth of the community, which will start at 5pmCT each Sunday and will include a meal every session and discussion groups. The church already has a dynamic program for youngsters up to grade 6. Debbie Grabill is the Children's minister, and the church regularly has 25 or more in Sunday morning Children's Church. Columbia United Methodist Church now has regular Sunday morning attendance of around 150 each Sunday morning. Rev. Janes said that he foresees continued growth which may mean the addition of a second early service on Sunday morning. Columbia United Methodist Church This story was posted on 2011-11-03 18:15:21
