A Columbia, KY man traveled to Bowling Green, KY to participate in the 5th annual Ride Out Loud bicycle trip in support of the National Kidney Foundation. For Jerry Thomas, Associate Professor of Communication at Lindsey Wilson College, this was his second time to participate. The event was held Saturday, September 24, 2011.

The event raises funds for the Foundation. Jerry and his wife, Dorene have a son who lost a kidney due to an injury 36 years ago which gives him personal connections to support this worthy cause.

Between two and three dozen riders participated in the event with the length of rides ranging from 8 miles, 20 miles, 44 miles, and 67 miles. All the riders chose the shorter trips except Thomas who at age 61 was one of the oldest participants.

He took five hours of actual riding time to complete the trip which combines some gently rolling terrain to some very steep hills which included both Warren and Butler counties while fending off several dogs.

Many may have seen Jerry walking or riding his bicycle a lot over the past three years.

Since January of 2009, he has walked, ridden his bicycle, and paddled a kayak for a combined total of well over 13,000 miles.

He hopes to inspire others to get off the couch and get moving for health and wellness. Contributed

2011-09-28 - Warren County, KY - Photo by Dorene Thomas.
Cyclists in the Ride Out Loud event in Bowling Green had choices of 8, 20, 44, and 67 mile routes. Columbia, KY, cyclist Jerry Thomas, 61, was the only rider at the event to choose the 67 mile route. He's hoping to inspire Adair Countians to get off the couch and get moving for health and wellness. Since 2009, Thomas has walked, ridden his bicycle, or paddled a canoe for well over 13,000 miles! The Ride Out Loud event, Saturday, September 24, 2011, was held to support the National Kidney Foundation.
