Prof. Thomas takes long route in Ride Out Loud cycling event Lindsey Wilson College Professor Jerry Thomas hopes to inspire others to get off the couch and get moving for health and wellness. Click on headline for story plus photo(s) > Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com A Columbia, KY man traveled to Bowling Green, KY to participate in the 5th annual Ride Out Loud bicycle trip in support of the National Kidney Foundation. For Jerry Thomas, Associate Professor of Communication at Lindsey Wilson College, this was his second time to participate. The event was held Saturday, September 24, 2011. The event raises funds for the Foundation. Jerry and his wife, Dorene have a son who lost a kidney due to an injury 36 years ago which gives him personal connections to support this worthy cause. Between two and three dozen riders participated in the event with the length of rides ranging from 8 miles, 20 miles, 44 miles, and 67 miles. All the riders chose the shorter trips except Thomas who at age 61 was one of the oldest participants. He took five hours of actual riding time to complete the trip which combines some gently rolling terrain to some very steep hills which included both Warren and Butler counties while fending off several dogs. Many may have seen Jerry walking or riding his bicycle a lot over the past three years. Since January of 2009, he has walked, ridden his bicycle, and paddled a kayak for a combined total of well over 13,000 miles. He hopes to inspire others to get off the couch and get moving for health and wellness. Contributed This story was posted on 2011-09-28 06:09:40
