Adair Countians help save Ft. Boonesborough, KY from attacks Expeditionary force including Barry Jones, Gary Pike, the author, Bobby Wilson of Livingston, KY, and most importantly, Jake Hill, volunteer as settlers fighting to defend historic Fort Boonesborough, Madison Co., KY. Click on headline for story + link(s) + photo(s) By Ken Hill Colonel Jacob Hill and his trusty band of misfits recently defended Fort Boonesborough from a marauding band of savages, intent on murder and mayhem. Barry Jones, Gary Pike (Columbia, KY), Bobby Wilson (Liviingston, KY) and I, along with numerous other 18th Century re-enactors set up camp on the grounds of Ft. Boonesborough on Thursday, September 22, 2011. We lived on-site through Sunday afternoon. We helped to entertain nearly 1000 area school children on Friday by answering all questions, posing for photo ops, and conducting a small skirmish for their amusement. I was amazed at how much the kids seemed to enjoy. Saturday brought great weather and lots of visitors. Jake joined our little group on Saturday and along with another 20-30 "Settlers" we participated in "The Siege of 1778". It took lots of rifle and cannon fire to fend off the Indian, French and British invaders. We capped off Saturday with a dusk raid. We closed the event with a final re-enactment on Sunday afternoon. Everyone had a great time. We lived like pioneers for the weekend, entertained the visitors and tourists, and made lots of new friends. We even attended church services on Sunday morning. The message was delivered by Parson John, a long-time re-enactor and minister. Holding true to the period the Parson asked attendees to help those who "could not read" in understanding the parchment pamphlets he handed out. Jake Hill was obviously the star of the event, and I truly believe he was the most photographed participant by most visitors. He embraced his role as an 18th century child and wandered throughout the Fort for many hours, talking with folks and posing for pictures. This was the first event for Barry, Jake, and me. It has taken all year to pull together enough stuff to be able to camp and participate in period correct fashion. Gary Pike and Bobby Wilson were our gracious guides, as both are long-time re-enactors and 18th Century Trekkers. -Ken Hill Ken Hill, the writer of this story, is proprietor, along with his wife Vickie Hill and their son, Jake Hill of the Hardscratch Store, 7694 Highway 55 S.
