Grandparents Day in Columbia/Adair Co. is Sun., Sept. 18, 2011 As proclaimed by CJE Ann Melton, Mayor Mark Harris Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) By Ellen Zornes Adair County Schools District Coordinator With grandparents day just around the corner, Judge Executive, Ann Melton and Mayor, Mark Harris, were distinguished guests of the Adair County Grand Group (grandparents raising grandchildren support group) at their monthly meeting. The mayor and judge executive were there particularly to sign a proclamation with the Grand Group as witnesses to officially declare Sunday, September 18, 2011 as Grandparents Day in Columbia and Adair County. The Grand Group is comprised of grandparents who are the primary caregiver for their grandchildren. There are numerous reasons why the parents can no longer raise their children and why the grandparents step in to raise those children who are their grandchildren. The grandparents have custody of these grandchildren; however, there are very limited state funds to aid these grandparents financially; the Lake Cumberland Area Development Districts (LCADD) Kentucky Caregiver Support Program that is part of Kentuckys Division on Aging do provide a few hundred dollars per year if the grandparent is fortunate enough to sign up in time to get even this amount. Many of these grandparents are retired and living on fixed incomes. It is not like the foster care system where the state carries much of the financial burden for the children. The Grand Group began in Adair County five years ago when our Family Resource and Youth Services Center Directors along with our A.C.T.I.O.N. Generation Director decided to begin a Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group. Adair County has the third largest number of grandparents as primary caregivers in the Lake Cumberland Area Development District. What we found was widespread community support whose hearts go out to these grandparents. Our Grand Group is not able to serve all of our communitys grandparents raising grandchildren because some grandparents are still employed while others who had planned to retire had to continue working in order to be financially able to raise their grandchild. We feel the Grand Group is a most fitting name for these grandparents since what they do is truly grand and we affectionately simply call them our Grands. The Grand Group meets monthly at various locations. We are always searching for agencies, organizations, churches, etc. in our community that offers any service that would benefit our Grands or their grandchildren or, if you would just like to meet, speak to or provide a meal for this group, please let us know. And if you are a grandparent (or other non-parent family member) and are the primary caregiver for your grandchild, we invite you to attend the Grand Group meetings. For more information, please contact Ellen Zornes at 384-3400 or your grandchilds Family Resource or Youth Services Center director: Debbie Cowan at 384-9112; Paula Garrison at 270-384-9752 or Jaime White at 270-384-6050. -ELLEN ZORNES This story was posted on 2011-09-13 04:10:18
