The Iconoclast: a sonnet, perhaps a tribute to Charles Marshburn The Iconoclast of Greater Fairplay is not without an Army - perhaps a majority - of Supporters. CM is reluctantly posting this Sonnet to all Iconclasts, penned fifty years ago, but seen by some of Charles Marshburn's most ardent admirers as a fitting tribute to him. CM is taking no side in the controversy, ignited by an innocent-enough letter from Kristy Keene, who is, of course right. -CM The Iconoclast A sonnet written by Robert Stone in 1961, reprinted here by popular demand by the supporters of Charles Marshburn Who seeks to educate, iconoclast CM Literary Department Note: We know that anyone who attends the Gradyville store, or sits on the literary panel at Hardscratch Deli, or argues in formal debates at Charles Patterson's place at Knifley, or discourses on central issues of the day at the Fountain Plaza in Downtown Columbia, KY, that all present talk of little else than the fine points of poetry and this note is not meant to offend them by its condescension. This merely in the interest of bringing Culture and Enlightenment to the Great Unwashed Masses: The foregoing is NOT a Shakespearean sonnet (4-4-4-2); it is More Better discribed, as The Other Kind of Sonnet, (6-8), the format CM has chosen over the (4-4-3-3), posting of which would, we fear, get CM Tarred and Weathered for Putting on Airs. -CM This story was posted on 2011-08-28 09:50:24
