Click on headline for full story with photo(s) By Kirby Hancock News from Adair Co. High School Future Farmers of America We have a FFA member who graduated this spring and is representing Adair County well at the Ky State Fair. Colton Downey, a freshman at Lindsey Wilson College, was selected as Lake Cumberland Region Star in Production this past year. Colton is the son of Bobby and Kathy Downey of Columbia, KY. As a freshman in high school, Colton was introduced to our Supervised Agriculture Experience Program (SAEP) which all FFA members are required to maintain throughout their FFA membership. This SAEP usually involves some type of agricultural project or work experience. Colton, with his entrepreneurial spirit, hit the ground running with a beef cattle project. While in high school, Colton worked tirelessly to build his beef cattle operation and create Russell Creek Cattle Company. Colton was able to purchase farmland, a new tractor, and a large selection of other farm equipment, land improvements, etc. throughout high school from his FFA project earnings. Colton does all of the purchasing, marketing and daily operations of his cattle buying company, which often exceeds 100 head of inventory. Not all high school students possess maturity and perseverance to start a highly successful business like Colton has. Colton is now an established Adair County beef producer. He is a prime example of what a FFA member can achieve through hard work, dedication and good parental support. Colton also has relied heavily on Mike Loy and others in the cattle industry for advice and support. Colton won numerous awards throughout high school and he is now being recognized with a large display of his accomplishments in the West Hall of the Kentucky State Fair and Exposition Center. Colton also has on display his antique Minneapolis Moline tractor at the state fair in the West Hall as well. The tractor was restored by the senior FFA class at Adair County High School this past year. Colton's FFA Advisors are Terry Harvey, Kirby Hancock, and Randy Rexroat. -Kirby Hancock, Adair County High School FFA Advisor This story was posted on 2011-08-24 05:08:42
