Anna Powell 1st recipient of Hillary Hadley Scholarship

Eastern Kentucky sophomore was ACHS Field Commander as was Hillary Hadley

By Inette Goodin

Bill Melton, the Associate Director for Regional Advancement at Eastern Kentucky University, has announced that Anna Powell, daughter of Doug and Katie Campbell of Columbia, KY, is the first recipient of the Hillary Hadley Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000.

Anna is a sophomore American Sign Language and English Interpretation major, is a member of EKU's Development Office Phonathan student staff and participated in the Adair County High School Band with Hillary, and knew her personally. Both girls served as former Field Commanders of the Adair Band.

The Hillary Hadley Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Hillary Hadley, the 21 year old daughter of Maxie and Kathy Hadley of Fairplay, KY, who died tragically in a truck/train accident in Berea, KY on August 11, 2010.

At the time of her death, Hillary was a senior at Eastern Kentucky University and was active in CRU, an on-campus ministry and was employed by Sherwin-Williams.

Originally intended for a graduating 2011 Adair County High School senior, with a 2.5 grade point average and in need of financial aid, who would be attending EKU, the scholarship was amended and given to a current EKU student who met the scholarship criteria since no 2011 ACHS graduating senior met the criteria.

Hillary's Scholarship fund continues to grow and will be awarded as long as funds are available. Anyone wishing to contribute should mail a check to the following address:
Eastern Kentucky University Foundation
Office of Advancement
521 Lancaster Avenue, CPO 19A
Richmond, KY 40475
Checks should be made payable to the Hillary Hadley Memorial Scholarship. All contributions are tax deductible. --Inette Goodin
