By Barbara Armitage

Learn about the correct methods of pruning trees and other important gardening information by attending Master Gardener's classes.

We are lucky to live in such an environmentally diverse area. Our rolling hills, rivers, lakes and even our own backyards are some of the loveliest in the country. All this beauty however comes with responsibility.

My good friend A.L. Sinclair often reminds me that education is the answer. Of the many gardening and landscaping classes I have attended over the years none have even come close to the level of the Master Gardener Program.

The Master Gardener Program is unique in that it is appropriate for every skill level of gardener and covers a wide variety of subjects of interest to anyone interested in the landscapes of our world.

Master Gardeners are a nationwide group of trained volunteers who work with the staff at their local Extension Service offices to provide consumers with reliable, up-to-date research based information about gardens and landscapes.

To become a Master Gardener you must complete a 13 week training course through Extension Services, in core subjects, taught by horticulture agents and other specialists.

In return for this training you must complete 50 hours of volunteer time within the first year after course completion. After the first year volunteers are required to contribute 20 volunteer hours per year plus 5 hours of Continuing Education.
