Bob Barnes finds 100 Unclaimed Properties listed for Columbians

All we want, as Rusty Tungate used to say, is "Our Fair Share." The state treasurer says that approximatelly $150 million in unclaimed property is being held. Based on the population of Adair County, a pro-rata Fair Share would be approximately $700,000, a tidy sum to add to the local economy, if we got it back. For the 7-county region including Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, KY, the fair share for the areas approximately 90,000 population would be $3,375,000! -CM

By Ed Waggener

This is a Big Story, we think, from Bob Barnes. He went online and found 100 unclaimed properties being held in the names of Columbians at the office of the Kentucky State Treasurer in Frankfort, KY, including one for a CM principal.

Bob Barnes wrote:
Ed, I noticed of the web site www.kytreasury that Linda M. Waggener P.O. Box 906 Columbia had unclaimed property from General Electric Corp. This property has been turned over to the state when the company cannot locate rightful owner. I have found close to 100 unclaimed properties of residents of Columbia. It is unreal how many our city and county government have on there. I even found an estate that had been given to our church. I would encourage everyone to visit this site and check out their name and deceased members of their family. This is for information only and I would not like for you to publish. --Bob Barnes
We'll need help finding out just how big a story this is: Whether or not it's enough to finance the preservation of the Adair County Courthouse if all claimants should donate it there, or just enough to fund the operations of the magnificent A-Team, if finders should donate it to those or other worthiest of causes.

Bob didn't say just how wealthy his church will be after it gets its money back. But we hope it's a lot.

Superintendent Treece said that he had been, a time ago, the finder of a few hundred dollars he had not realized he had.

In any case, State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach is making it a priority of his office to get the unclaimed property to its rightful owners. At the Unclaimed Property Search webpage, there is a history of the program.
"Since the start of Kentucky's Unclaimed Property program in 1942, more than $100 million in cash and other assets has been collected. The Commonwealth currently holds more than $150 million worth of unclaimed property for over 200,000 individuals.

"In 1994, the General Assembly transferred responsibility for the unclaimed property fund to the Kentucky State Treasury. Recently, Kentucky's Unclaimed Property Fund joined MissingMoney.com, a national database of unclaimed property. Currently, several states including Kentucky participate in the national database. Using the link on the Unclaimed Property Main Page, you can search the national database to determine if you or a loved one have unclaimed property in any of the member states.
To quickly enter names to find if you or someone you know has Unclaimed Property held in their name, click to search page for Unclaimed Property held at the Kentucky State Treasury .

We didn't find a way to do a bulk search for an area, but if that tool is available, please let us know. We'd like to see all the rightful treasure which belongs in Adair and surrounding counties returned. here, where it will do the most good.
