The best thing about small towns

By Jim

Some wag quipped that the best thing about small towns is that everyone knows you, and the worst thing is that everyone knows you.

Case in point of the first half of that comment:
About two weeks ago, my long-time acquaintance Carthel Porter passed from this vale of tears. Now generally, when a friend passes, my child bride and I make a small donation to a charity or church in lieu of sending flowers, but for some folks, flowers truly do say it best, and Carthel definitely fell in the "some folks" category. The day before the funeral, I called my favorite florist within the bounds of the Sacred Triangle over in Russell County (where I haven't lived for nigh onto forty years) and after the obligatory exchange of greetings, told Steve I needed to place an order. That's all I said. He replied, "These are for Carthel, right?"
Gotta love small towns :)- JIM
