A report from ground zero: Mount Hope, Alabama

"Jim" writes: Tonight, I finally heard from my cousin Chris, who lives in northwest Alabama near Mount Hope, a community in Lawrence County. There are 14 confirmed deaths in Lawrence County (seven in Mount Hope alone), several serious injuries, and untold property damage.

Chris' letter (forwarded to CM with his permission for publication) says more than any news report could::

Letter from "Jim's" cousin Chris, Mount Hope, AL

Our family is fine but the community of Mount Hope where we live is absolutely devastated. The tornado, which has been rated as an EF-5, hit about two miles from us. Not sure how much news you've followed, but it is the same one that hit Smithville, Miss and Hackleburg and Phil Campbell, Alabama. It hit Mount Hope about 10 minutes after Phil Campbell.

It is absolutely heart-breaking and the worst thing I've ever seen in my life, hands down. Just complete total destruction on a mile wide path. We lost seven people in Mount Hope. We are a very sparsely populated farming community so that saved us the fatality numbers like they had in Phil Campbell and Hackleburg. I cannot really describe the damage so I'm not going to try, except to just say that it is almost surreal. I have seen plenty of tornado damage in my life, but nothing even remotely close to anything like this.

We have really just begun to get an idea of the scale of things. We finally got power back Monday. Cell phones didn't work much...the towers were damaged and those that weren't couldn't carry the load too well. Even the radio transmitters were knocked out so getting much news that way was spotty for about 36 hours. My mother finally got through to me and was asking me a bunch of questions. I finally told her, "Heck mom, I can tell you what's happened here in Mount Hope, but you know a whole more about the rest of Alabama than I do."

With all of that said, it has also been so uplifting to see how people have come together...this has given me a lot of faith in the goodness of most people. - Chris
