Lindsey Wilson dedicates Whitfield House of Student Services Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College community honored "one special lady" on Thursday afternoon when it dedicated the Elizabeth Lowe Whitfield House of Student Financial Services. The Whitfield House, 305 Lindsey Wilson St., is named in honored of Adair County native and LWC alumna Elizabeth Lowe Whitfield. The building houses the college's financial-aid offices. "All students have financial needs, but not every college has a Dr. Elizabeth Lowe Whitfield," LWC Vice President for Educational Outreach and Student Financial Services Denise Fudge said at the ceremony. "Dr. Whitfield has been instrumental in helping us to fulfill our mission. She is a special lady." Speakers recalled the hundreds of phone calls Whitfield has made on behalf of students, as well as the scores of handwritten notes of encouragement she has sent to the college's students, faculty and staff members. "One of her many spiritual gifts is to be an encourager, and she does that better than anyone I know," Fudge said. Overall, more than 95 percent of LWC students receive financial aid. This year, the college awarded students more than $10 million in institutional aid. One of the students who has been on the receiving end of Whitfield's generosity is Cody Gabbert, a biology senior from Columbia. Both Gabbert and his wife, Lori, have known Whitfield's love and generosity. "She is a remarkable woman," Gabbert said. "Her support for this institution and its students goes beyond scholarships and generosity. ... What can be more everlasting than contributing to the educational growth of another person?" Whitfield, who graduated from the college in 1949, has been a member of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees since the 1981. Currently a resident of Bowling Green, KY, she was one of the first women to serve on the Lindsey Wilson board. LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. called her "the college's greatest fan, our most ardent supporter." "Elizabeth Lowe Whitfield loves this college, and its people unconditionally," Luckey said. "It is her first thought when she wakes up in the morning, and the last thought when she puts her head on the pillow." Whitfield grew up in a house that was adjacent to the college. She has known all eight of the college's presidents. "It is nice honor for the college to do this for me," she said at the ceremony. This story was posted on 2011-04-29 03:55:12
