1899 Invention: Mr. Williams' improved telephone A more perfect instrument (but did it have call waiting?) By "Jim" The ingenuity of Adair Countians never ceases to amaze. Case in point: this article about an improved telephone devised by Luther Williams of Montpelier (this Luther being the son of a well-known man of the cloth, Ed. Z.T. Williams). The article appeared in the May 10, 1899 Adair County News. Mr. Luther Williams, who has done much work in operating telephone lines through this section of the State in the last few years, has recently made what he considers a great improvement in the telephone. A sample phone is now in Reed & Miller's office, and the operator finds it much more convenient than the ones heretofore in operation. This phone is a combination of three different instruments, the strong points of all three combined, making a more perfect instrument. Also the construction makes it a more convenient toll-line phone, by having the ringing apparatus in the center instead of above. Discovered by "Jim. This story was posted on 2011-04-26 18:01:29
